So 69 years ago today was the publication of George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. This was one of the few “intellectual” books I read as a young-un, and I loved the whole idea of it. Newspeak in particular intrigued me and I have often referenced it over the years. A very fascinating idea for sure.
But I never really believed it would happen. How wrong was I and how scaryingly accurate was George Orwell. In fact, I don’t believe even Mr. Orwell in his wildest imagination would have anticipated how much we have welcomed Big Brother in to our every day lives, and not think twice about it. I have 10 Amazon Echos dotted around the house and three cloud cams – all running 24×7 listening and recording everything! You can’t make this shit up.
Just read this opening description on Wikipedia:
The novel is set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation.
It almost makes we want to rip them all out … almost, but I like the eggs. Happy Birthday Big Brother.
