Well, yes, first records. My first single was a lesser known Michael Jackson release, though it was also the title track on his first album. The song itself was Michael Jackson’s debut solo single, released on October 7 1971. It was the annus mirabilis of pop and rock according to David Hepworth. Admittedly, Jacko’s contribution was not a highlight of the year, looking back, but I’m not ashamed that it was my first purchase, rather than Bryter Layter.
For me, even now, Jackson’s early days are his best: the clarity of the voice, the range of singing, the arrangements by The Corporation, and the harmonies with his brothers. I Want You Back is a solid gold classic, the first single Jacko sang on and still the best thing he ever did.
