So sometimes we steer away from beer and cleavage on this blog and get more serious. One American movie that I found really fascinating was Love & Mercy focusing on the life and times of the supremely talented Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. I really loved this movie and thought all of the key actors (John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti) did a very fine and convincing job. It is really sad to peek behind the curtain into the life that a bona fide genius like Brian endured when he was younger. Particular as he wrote (along with Tony Asher) one of my all time favorite songs God Only Knows. I love that song so much I have a playlist of 18 different versions that I frequently play (and I’m doing so right now). I really enjoyed the movie and have listened to even more Beach Boys since watching it. The brilliant Brian Wilson was certainly America’s answer to Lennon and McCartney. In fact, Paul McCartney really loved the song too and said in 2007:
‘God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian.
Of course the movie is not harmed by featuring the American Beauty Elizabeth Banks.
